Indiana Drivers License Change of Address Requirements

Have you recently moved to Indiana or to a new residence in Indiana? The Bureau of Motor Vehicles must be notified within 60 days, it's the law!

When you change your address it is the law that you notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) within 60 days of your move.  You will not be required to change your license, but are required to notify BMV in writing.

You have the option of writing to the BMV to notify them of your change in address. Your written notification can be sent to:

Be sure that you include the following:

  • Your full name as it appears on your license
  • Your previous address
  • Your new address
  • Driver license number
  • Social Security number
  • Proof of your new address such as a cable bill, electric bill, or employment pay stub.

The BMV has two addresses on file for each resident: a legal address and a mailing address.
 
Legal Address

This is the address that the BMV has on file as your permanent place of residency in Indiana. You must validate this address and it is the address that is used for driver license or identification card. It is essential that this address is updated and valid and that you provide proper documentation and proof. To update your legal address, you must visit a BMV office near you. 

The Mailing Address

This is an alternative address that you can choose to provide the BMV for purposes of correspondence - including license plates, renewal reminders…etc. . To update your mailing address you can visit a BMV office near you or you can do change it online.
